Parrish may have the best name story in the county. The area was first known as Hewitt, after its first post office in 1878 (some also called it Jonesboro, after the first postmaster). Then in 1890 the Sheffield, Birmingham and Tennessee Railroad opened a telegraph office in an unused boxcar where two rail lines crossed.
The first telegraph operator in that boxcar was named Parrish. The community officially took his name on January 1, 1891.
Coal mines opened nearby in 1918 and brought new families to town, and Parrish incorporated in 1922. The historic Parrish Trestle still stands as a reminder of the railroad that put the town on the map, and every December the town throws a Christmas party.
